Finally Friday

It is finally Friday and we are ready for the weekend. I will be reading the book Follow the Drinking Gourd today. We will practice counting by ones and tens today and review the number words one through ten. We are going to be reading a book about stars and then do some stargazing tonight to look for the Big Dipper and other constellations that we can find. Our study on manners will continue with me reading Dora's Book of Manners. Today, we will begin learning about mammals and their different characteristics. I will also review the alphabet and letter sounds and addition problems. The sun is shining today and it is supposed to be around 70 degrees today. Yay! This will be perfect weather to get outside and play today. Later this afternoon we will go to the library to check out books for our homeschool next week. Have a great weekend everyone!

Playdate today

It was a beautiful day outside for our playgroup that we participate in with some other homeschooling families. The children had so much fun playing with each other and us moms had fun too chatting. We continued our study of the solar system today with the moon and how it can change its appearance in many different ways. Our letter recognition and addition practice continued today also. I think our papier-mache earth is a flop! It did not come out very well today when we tried to unmold it so I think we will pass on that one. We are learning about the food chain today. We will learn how milk gets to our store shelves. We did some arts today with playdough and made some animals with the dough and also did some drawing of animals on blank paper. It was a fun day today!

The Sun and other things

Today we are learning about the sun and how it is a part of our solar system. We will read a book on the sun and the solar system. We will continue to practice the alphabet while concentrating on the uppercase and lowercase letters. We will practice our addition too. Our papier-mache earth is still drying so we will paint it tomorrow with blue paint for the oceans and lakes and green paint for the land. We will also learn how God created the animals on the sixth day of creation and how they are very important to us. Today is a rather slow day in our homeschool. I will see everyone tomorrow.

Back to work

Today we will get back to our homeschooling and catch up on all of our work after a fun day yesterday. We are continuing with our bird study today by studying all the different bird eggs and trying to match them to the appropriate birds. I will read aloud the story "Henny Penny" and then ask a few questions about it to David. We will continue with our phonics and addition practice. We will also be making a homemade bird nest today using flour, water, yarn, and a balloon. Also, we plan on looking at birds outside today and making a notebook of all the birds we see by drawing them in the notebook. There are lots of books to be read today on the alphabet and learning about manners. We checked these out at our local library in Branford. I will teach about the globe today and show David the basic facts about the earth. Finally, we will make a papier-mache Earth model today and let it dry and then we will add something to it each day. As you can see we have a very busy day planned but it will be fun and exciting. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. See you tomorrow.

No school today

Today we did not do homeschool because my daughter was off from public school so we decided to take the day off too so we could go and do some things with her for the day. We had a really nice day park hopping. The weather was beautiful. We got some take out food from High Springs and then came home just awhile ago to eat and relax at home. I will be back to my regular homeschool post tomorrow. I hope everyone had a wonderful day.

Flooding and Flamingos

Well it rained all day yesterday nonstop and when I went into town to pick up my daughter from school the roads were flooded. They had even closed off some roads. It looked like lakes had cropped up everywhere. It was incredible. Thank goodness the sun is shining today and it looks to be clearing up.

We will be learning about flamingos today. I just learned that flamingos are not born pink but gray. The parents take turns sitting on the egg before it is born. They can fly up to 35 m.p.h. and use the water to help them take off.

Our dinosaur learning series will continue today with the Pterodactyl. I have thouroughly enjoyed learning about all the different dinosaurs with my son. My son knew so much about the dinosaurs as we have read each book this week. He would tell me which ones were plant-eating versus a meat eater. He watches Dinosaur Train on PBS and I attribute that show with him learning so much about them.

We made our edible bird nests yesterday and they turned out great! Hopefully we will get to see some birds today using the pinecone feeder we put up the other day.

We will continue practicing our letter sounds today and addition problems and Hooked on Phonics.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Rainy Day

It is dark and rainy outside this morning. So, it looks like we won't get any playtime in today in our backyard. It will be a good day to read all those Sonlight books. We are learning about birds today and their different characteristics. We found a bird nest the other day that was halfway falling out of a tree so we took it down and have it in our homeschool room now to study. It is so intersting to see all the different things that birds use to make a nest. We found the usual twigs in this nest but there was also some stuffing from a stuffed animal and some yarn. My son was really amazed at how birds use so many different things to build their nests.

We will be making edible bird nests today. I don't know if we will get to see any birds perusing our birdfeeder today since it is rainy and yucky outside. But we will see. We will also be reading more books today about dinosaurs and reviewing our letter sounds. We will review some simple addition problems and also practice counting by ones and tens.

We are also still reading in our Martin Luther King book that we checked out from the library. We mailed Coretta Scott King a letter thanking her for all that she and her husband have done for America.

That is it for today.

My first day of blogging

January 20, 2010

This is my first blog and my first post. I have never blogged before. I have only read other people's blogs. I thought I would give blogging a try since I enjoy reading other blogs. Maybe someone might enjoy reading mine.

My purpose of this blog is to share my homeschooling daily life and other adventures that happen each day in and outside of our home.

Today was a typical day in our homeschool. We woke up around 8:00 AM and started with our morning breakfast of oatmeal and fruit. My son is 5 years old and we are using Alpha Omega Horizons preschool curriculum with him along with Sonlight curriculum. I love both of them and we have been enjoying the activities that go along with them. I also supplement with a workbook called Learn At Home. It has daily lesson plans and wonderful hands-on activities to do each day with your child. Today we built a birdfeeder using a pinecone found on our property. We put peanut butter on it and then spread the bird seed on that and then we hung it in a tree in our front yard. My son is so excited to see how many different types of birds we can attract with the new feeder.

We are also learning about dinosaurs this week which has been a great experience for me as I have learned many things that I didn't know about dinosaurs. We checked out some books from out local library on dinosaurs and they are very interesting. I have to say that our local library is a wonderful resource.

My son then started on his Hooked on Phonics lessons. He is learning what sounds the letters make. I am enjoying the HOP very much and it was recommended to me by a good friend.

That was our day for today. I am looking forward to blogging each day and sharing our lives with others. See you tomorrow!
