Flooding and Flamingos

Well it rained all day yesterday nonstop and when I went into town to pick up my daughter from school the roads were flooded. They had even closed off some roads. It looked like lakes had cropped up everywhere. It was incredible. Thank goodness the sun is shining today and it looks to be clearing up.

We will be learning about flamingos today. I just learned that flamingos are not born pink but gray. The parents take turns sitting on the egg before it is born. They can fly up to 35 m.p.h. and use the water to help them take off.

Our dinosaur learning series will continue today with the Pterodactyl. I have thouroughly enjoyed learning about all the different dinosaurs with my son. My son knew so much about the dinosaurs as we have read each book this week. He would tell me which ones were plant-eating versus a meat eater. He watches Dinosaur Train on PBS and I attribute that show with him learning so much about them.

We made our edible bird nests yesterday and they turned out great! Hopefully we will get to see some birds today using the pinecone feeder we put up the other day.

We will continue practicing our letter sounds today and addition problems and Hooked on Phonics.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

  1. My kids always amaze me the things they can remember about animals especially. That is why when I teach, I try to find methods they will enjoy, and remember what they learn. Some things are just hard to make fun like fractions LOL.

  2. It is amazing what they retain when it is taught in a way that is fun and enjoyable. I agree with you that there is no fun way to teach fractions. Ugh! I dread when that time comes for me. Thanks for your comment Miss Melissa.

  3. Wow! You have had a busy day! And Flamingos - I love flamingos! When Daniel was 7 years old we were studying Flamingos - and he asked me what baby flamingos were called! Before I could answer, he said "Flaming-lings!" Hahaha I think they are actually called something else (like chicks), but he wanted to sound intelligent! LOL I learn so much with and from my kids...and it is fun! Blessings, Laura

  4. That is so cute Miss Laura about Daniel calling the flamingos "flaming-lings". I agree with you about how we learn so much from our kids. I am having so much fun homeschooling. Thanks for your comment.
